Let’s just start with what doesn’t Amazon do or own? It that a positive or a negative? Well let’s just say the online giant did it again. It recently launched Amazon Rapids reading app for kids.
Amazon Rapids is designed for kids ages 7 to 12 years old. It offers illustrated short stories using chat style bubbles that bring the stories to life one message at a time. The stories are told though the lens of characters chatting with each other.
Amazon Rapids Reading App For Kids
Will it or should it replace books? In my opinion NO WAY! But, it can offer a fun alternative way to read.
“Many kids already love using phones to chat with friends and family,” said Rohit Agarwal, General Manager of Amazon K-12 Education. “We wanted to see what authors and illustrators could create with an app that made it easy to tell stories that way.”
Kids can choose from many types of original stories including: adventure, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, humor and sports. There are hundreds of stories available. Amazon says it will be adding more stories every month.
Amazon Rapids has a glossary so kids can look up the definition or pronunciation of a word just by tapping on the word. Kids aren’t reading yet? Not a problem. Rapids has a “Read to me” option, that reads the stories aloud while kids follow along.
Amazon Rapids Free Trial
Amazon rapids app is available for iOS, Android and Amazon Fire devices. I suppose the real question here is cost. Right now Amazon is offering an introductory rate of $2.99 per month or about $30 per year. If you’re on the fence, Amazon does offer a free 14-day trial.
Let me know what you think about this app. Would you download it for your child? Leave a comment below.
